Enterprise LIMS available on-premises, in private AWS cloud, or as SaaS, designed to manage GMP sample lifecycle, batch release, stability, and environmental monitoring for pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device, and CDMO laboratories.
STARLIMS is the corporate brand for the R&D Quality Manufacturing Informatics Platform bundling Quality Manufacturing LIMS (enterprise pharma/biotech edition), QM Essentials LIMS (SaaS for SMB batch manufacturers, launched October 2025 on 12.5 technology), Labstep R&D ELN (acquired August 2023), SDMS, LES, and Advanced Analytics 2.0. The underlying engineering chassis is the STARLIMS Technology Platform v12 (current sub-releases v12.1-v12.6).
Founded in Israel 1986, IPO'd in the US 2007, acquired by Abbott Laboratories 2009 for ~$123M, divested to Francisco Partners 2021, and re-launched as an independent brand. On 13 January 2026 STARLIMS announced a strategic investment by Turn/River Capital (Francisco Partners exited). The vendor reports more than 1,100 customers across 2,000+ laboratories in 60+ countries.
A March 2026 MODA Platform acquisition from Lonza adds GMP environmental monitoring (MODA-EM) and execution systems (MODA-ES), framed as a "full-stack" QC plus manufacturing operations offering across an "approximately 700 enterprise" customer base. Pharma footprint includes GlaxoSmithKline (multi-site Europe/South America/Asia rollout), Douglas Pharmaceuticals (New Zealand), Immucor (Clinical Solution on AWS), Wyoming Public Health Laboratory, and the US FDA Office of Regulatory Affairs (chemistry, devices, forensics, microbiology testing).
Quality Manufacturing (QM) LIMS is positioned explicitly for pharmaceutical, medical device, and biotechnology manufacturers with 15+ OOTB workflows including batch testing with CoA, stability, environmental testing, materials receiving, contract-labs testing, continuous process, sample testing, and outsourced testing. The MODA Platform (acquired March 2026 from Lonza) adds GMP paperless environmental monitoring purpose-built for cell/gene therapy and biotech. For smaller manufacturers, QM Essentials is a SaaS edition with five-user minimum subscription and reported 4-6 week implementation.
Three deployment options: (a) on-premises (dominant enterprise pattern); (b) Managed Hosting on AWS (customer-owned perpetual licenses, STARLIMS-managed infrastructure); (c) Cloud Subscription on AWS (subscription bundles licences, support, infrastructure, managed services). QM Essentials is SaaS-only. AWS regions not publicly enumerated. DR objectives: RTO 4 hours, RPO 15 minutes.
HTML5 clients run natively in modern browsers (Chrome, Edge). Legacy XFD systems require Edge as of TP v12.4 (IE deprecated). Browser-based mobility since TP 12.6. SSO: SAML 2.0 supported since TP v12 and extended to native-app/XFD Bridge; OIDC not explicitly stated. REST APIs via STARLIMS REST API framework (TP v12); legacy SOAP web services supported. SiLA/AnIML not explicitly supported. Pre-built connectors: SAP-certified, Waters Empower via Bridge, RS232/TCP-IP, HL7, Salesforce. Strategic partners: AWS, Microsoft (Silver), Crystal Reports. Microsoft stack (Windows, SQL Server, IIS) is a noted lock-in consideration.
Enterprise pricing is quoted only; no public price list is published. No free trial for the enterprise LIMS; a demo is available at /demo/. Reported deal sizes, enterprise minimums, and setup fees are undisclosed.
Vendor offers perpetual licences (with separate Managed Hosting Services) and Cloud Subscription bundles (licences, infrastructure, and managed services in a single monthly fee). Concurrent-user is the dominant pattern. Modular pricing applies to add-ons (Stability, Advanced Analytics 2.0, SDMS, LES, Labstep). QM Essentials begins at a minimum five-user subscription.
Two named licence types appear in customer reviews: DCL (Defined Concurrent License) and FCL (Full Concurrent License). A G2 reviewer reports the DCL-to-FCL upgrade costs approximately 3x an analogous SAP licence move, with an "AMP" annual maintenance fee that increases yearly.
SMB/single-site QM Essentials SaaS: 4-6 weeks (vendor-stated). Mid-size single-site QM LIMS on-premises: not publicly quantified; industry experience 6-12 months for a configured-only deployment. Multi-site global pharma (GSK-class): years across phases; CSols-documented "large pharmaceutical company" deployment covered pharma plus consumer-health business units across multiple sites with phased CPV modules.
STARLIMS Professional Services and Cloud Services are vendor-delivered. Most enterprise deployments use a third-party SI (CSols, Alpha Engineering); priced separately from licenses. Migration: XFD-to-HTML5 dictionary upgrades supported by automated converter for ELN documents; broader legacy data migration is bespoke and integrator-led. Common pitfalls: legacy XFD-to-HTML5 dictionary migrations are projects in themselves; heavy custom scripting blocks upgrade paths (Capterra reviewer: "due to heavy customisation the upgrades did not happen"); SDMS file parsing sensitive to minor instrument-output changes; Results Entry performance reported as slow; 2019 FDA MAUDE event for Immucor demonstrated infrastructure migrations require explicit revalidation of cache and template paths.

Users report STARLIMS is feature-rich, highly configurable, and effective at standardising regulated lab workflows once the dictionary is configured. They cite strong 21 CFR Part 11 e-signature support, an audit trail "efficient and easily exportable" for inspectors, well-handled material- and product-release workflows, smooth SAP and HL7 integration, multi-laboratory profiles with role-based access, "white-glove" support during implementation, and minimal IT-side maintenance once stable. One G2 reviewer notes recognition by the Australian TGA.
Users report some OOTB screens look dated, a meaningful learning curve, Results Entry can be slow, and SDMS file parsing is sensitive to minor instrument-output changes. Capterra reviewers note heavy customisation has historically blocked timely upgrades and degraded performance over time. Legacy XFD-based ELN/SDMS UX is consistently flagged as less intuitive than HTML5 modules. One Capterra reviewer characterised the un-customised system as "byzantine" for typical analytical-lab operations. Annual-maintenance fee escalation is a recurring procurement concern; DCL-to-FCL license tier gap is ~3x. Glassdoor employer rating: 3.4/5 across 41 reviews with cons cited including "high sales leadership turnover, outdated tech and limited resources."
