Integrated LIMS + SDMS + LES + procedural ELN delivered as a single application for pharmaceutical manufacturing QA/QC, stability, environmental monitoring, and contract testing — with native Chromeleon CDS integration and an AWS-hosted single-tenant managed cloud option.

Thermo Fisher positions SampleManager LIMS (current GA release v21.3, from Thermo Fisher Digital Science & Automated Solutions) as the only LIMS shipping LIMS, SDMS, LES, and procedural ELN as one application with one schema, with native Thermo-built integration to Thermo Scientific Chromeleon CDS.

SampleManager began life in 1991 as VG LIMS, the heritage behind its proprietary VGL (Vacuum Generator Language) scripting. It is now in its fourth major architectural generation: a Windows .NET desktop client, a browser/web client, and a tablet-native mobile app, all backed by a Windows Server tier and an Oracle (primary) or Microsoft SQL Server database.

Three components anchor the pharma positioning: the Pharma Solution accelerator, deployed across 25 Patheon CDMO sites and designed to bring a QA/QC lab live in "less than 5 months"; direct Chromeleon CDS integration ("Chromeleon Link"); and SAP/S4HANA integration via SampleManager IDI. Thermo Fisher claims that "75% of the world's top 20 largest pharmaceutical companies" rely on SampleManager, a vendor marketing claim not independently audited. SampleManager sits separately from Watson LIMS, for regulated bioanalytical and PK/PD work, and Nautilus LIMS, for R&D and biopharma discovery. The "General Laboratory Use Only" disclaimer on the product page states the product line is not intended for in vitro diagnostic use.

Pharmaceutical Edition

The Pharma Solution for SampleManager LIMS ships with preconfigured workflows, LES methods (content uniformity, dissolution, Karl Fischer titration, loss on drying, organic/inorganic impurities, HPLC impurity detection, ID assay, sulphated ash, monthly balance calibration), Statistical Quality Control, Environmental Monitoring with pre-loaded ISO/EU cleanroom specifications, media management, review-by-exception, multi-stage incubation, and a Pharma-specific validation pack (URS, IQ scripts, OQ scripts including pre-executed OQ for industry features, Traceability Matrix). Built on SampleManager LIMS + SDMS + LES with direct Chromeleon CDS integration. Vendor claims OQ time reduction of ~90% and PQ time reduction of ~50% versus configuring from base product.

Three deployment options are offered: Thermo Fisher-managed AWS Cloud (single-tenant, customer-isolated VPC, customer-controlled upgrade cadence), the customer's own cloud-hosted solution (typically customer-managed AWS or Azure), and on-premises. AWS is the only cloud provider for the Thermo-managed offering, and it is single-tenant rather than multi-tenant SaaS. The database is Oracle RDS on the AWS-managed option, or Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server on-premises. Data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest (S3, FSx, RDS Oracle) and TLS 1.2 in transit, with an IPsec VPN tunnel for non-public traffic. RTO and RPO are both 24 hours, with daily automated backups and point-in-time recovery.

Access is through a Windows .NET desktop client, a browser-based web client (minimum supported browser versions are not published), native tablet apps for Android and iPadOS, and a web Customer Portal. Single sign-on is supported via OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect or LDAP; SAML is explicitly not supported, per the vendor FAQ. Okta and Microsoft AD are the named identity providers, with multi-factor authentication inherited from the identity provider. APIs comprise REST with token authentication (hardened in release 21.3), OData v4, the Sweeper Service for parsed-file ingestion, and Integration Manager as a separately licensed enterprise integration bus. Named pre-built connectors cover Chromeleon CDS and SAP R/3 and S/4HANA via SM-IDI. AnIML, HL7/FHIR, OPC-UA, GraphQL, and webhooks have no published support. ASTM D6299 is supported for AQC.

Pricing Information

No public list price is published; pricing is quote-based. An independent analyst estimate (ITQlick) puts per-user licence cost at $4,000–$12,000+, not vendor-confirmed. No public free trial or freemium tier is offered; demonstrations are arranged through the product page, and sandbox/training environments are provisioned as part of paid implementations.

Licensing runs two models side by side: subscription for the AWS-managed cloud, with an annual hosting fee sized to licence count, and perpetual licence plus annual support for on-premises. Add-ons (Integration Manager, Pharma Solution, Data Analytics Solutions, Environmental Monitoring Solution, ATR/AI Solution) are licensed by module. Implementation, validation, and training are all separate professional-services line items.

Implementation Details

A small biotech or single QA/QC lab implementing the Pharma Solution goes live in "less than 5 months" on the vendor's own benchmark, not independently audited. A mid-cap pharma multi-site rollout runs 12–24 months. A top-20 pharma enterprise global rollout runs multiple years: Astrix's pharma case study describes a phased rollout across 11 sites in three releases (MEC, Analytical plus SAP QM via SM-IDI, and Stability), and CSols' 12.2 rollout covered 25 sites across 25 countries.

Implementation, validation support, and training are all priced separately as professional services. Astrix is the named "premier services partner"; CSols, Zifo, Accenture, and Deloitte are other named SIs. Excel/CSV import runs through the Sweeper Service, with API ingestion via REST/OData. Hybrid static-data migration from a prior LIMS, including Beckman LabManager, a homegrown system, or an earlier SampleManager version, is a standard SI offering. No vendor-published packaged migrator exists for other legacy LIMS platforms, including its own Watson LIMS; migrating from them is SI-led custom work.

Common pitfalls: VGL legacy code carries forward indefinitely. SAP-LIMS interfacing is complex: "any interface to SAP can be time consuming and costly" (CSols). Simple serial-instrument integration "requires some VGL customisation" (Astrix). Multilingual, multi-site governance is a factor, and results-entry performance slows under heavy data volumes.

What the Community Reports

Anonymous feedback from pharmaceutical professionals using this solution

4.3 out of 5

What Users Like

Users report that the single application covering LIMS, SDMS, LES, and procedural ELN reduces inter-system integration burden. Users describe the workflow engine as flexible, the audit trail as configurable down to field level, and the dashboards and SQC trending as informative, citing decades of multi-site deployment. Pharma users cite the Pharma Solution accelerator and the pre-executed OQ scripts as reducing validation cost.

What Users Dislike

Users report VGL scripting dependency as the most persistent friction point: "Thermo Scientific LIMS still uses VGL coding which is NOT open-source." The skills market for it is narrow, and customisations carry forward indefinitely. Users report performance degradation under heavy data volumes in results-entry and occasional crashes on older versions, and describe the interface as dated. Users frequently cite price as high, with "more affordable price management" requested by G2 reviewers. Implementation complexity and dependency on Thermo Fisher or specialised SIs (Astrix, CSols, Zifo) constrain organisations without internal LIMS expertise.
